Stone is used for the construction of castles, towers, stone walls, and after the first patch, used in the construction of town centers as well. Wood is used for building and repairing most structures, used to create farms to provide food resources, and the production of ships, siege engines, and range units such as the various types of archers, and the skirmisher units. There are four types of resources, all of which are required to advance through the ages: wood, food, gold, and stone. Any unit having a higher elevation than the one it is attacking receives an attack bonus. The isometric rendered landscape features different elevations of terrain. The player has the power to order them to move or attack (all units except for trade carts, transport ship and trade ships), construct new buildings, gather necessary resources ( villager units), and perform a range of other tasks, such as repair damaged buildings or garrison inside castle or town center for safety.

The player directly controls villagers, which are the most important economic unit in the game. Once the user has reached the Imperial Age, they gain access to all the upgrades, units, and buildings that may be built and researched for their specific civilization. Finally, the user can reach the Imperial Age, which is reminiscent of the early years of the Renaissance. The next age is the Castle Age, in which the powerful castle may be built, and used to produce powerful units including the unique unit of each civilization. After a short time, the user gains the ability to advance to the Feudal Age, where more upgrades, buildings, and units become available. The game begins in the Dark Ages, where very few buildings and units are available. The player has control over a society and guides them through four 'ages'. 4.2 Artificial Intelligence and Random Map Scripting.It's a win condition in Age 2 vs it's a progression tier in Age 3. Age 3 is a lot more confusing in that regard.Д) Age 3 has trading posts throughout the map and you can send a trade cart back and forth vs in Age 2 your trade carts will go back and forth between markets on your team.Д®) Wonders are very different in Age 2. Units look distinct and very different and their uniforms are usually identifiable for what that unit does. Meaning if I put my villagers on gold/coin in Age 3 they will just gather it vs in Age 2 they will gather as much as they can carry and take it to a building and then go back to collecting (imo Age 3 got that right)Д«) Age 3 has much faster combat and a much higher combat focus.Д¬) Age 2's unit composition is a lot easier to understand. I've been playing Age for about a year and a half or so off and on and I switch between the two.ДЄ) Age 2 has resource gathering buildings vs Age 3 that does not. AOE4 seemed much more of a successor of AOE2 from what I played. I grew up playing them and played them all. AOE2 the civs are much more вЂњclonesвЂќ of eachother. Comparing say, the Dutch in AOE3 vs the French in AOE3 and youвЂ™ll notice a lot of differences. Each Civ in AOE2 will have a unique unit and some variances to tech trees, but overall theyвЂ™re much more similar. Each villager must have their own farm.ДЄOE3 has much more distinct differences between each civilization than AOE2. Villagers can use the same mill 10 at a time.

Units can be trained (usually) 5 at a time. AOE2 has a grid based placement system and an extra resource.ДЄOE2 requires your villagers to drop off resources at camps/TCвЂ™s whereas AOE3 does not.ДЄOE3 has a home city mechanic with a deck which will give you boosts which can change your strategy quite a bit.ДЄOE3 has trading posts which can give you access to Native American settlements or trade route bonuses.ДЄOE3 does a lot of things in batches.
